Last night, a storm came through and knocked out the power. Everything was calm until suddenly we noticed heavy winds and the trees in the backyard being bent over dramatically. We pulled out the Prayer Against Storms and prayed. The storm subsided. We later learned that a neighbor lost a large tree in the winds.
We first learned of the power of this prayer 23 years ago in Minnesota. These were pre-internet and smartphone days. There were storms warnings and we had the television turned on for the weather. We had been given a little Catholic prayer booklet called the Pieta Book. It had a copy of this Prayer Against Storms in it. The television news was warning us of potential tornados and severe thunderstorms. The radar image was showing the large storms moving into the Twin Cities from the north. We could see the storm front approaching. We prayed the prayer together. After finishing, we watched the storm split in the middle on television and go around where we were living! The storms started breaking up and subsiding.
Here in Virginia, we had a similar experience. One day, my wife heard a train outside our window. There are no trains near us! She realized a storm was upon us and said the Prayer Against Storms. After the storm passed and we went outside to inspect the damage, we learned that a small tornado had gone by our house. The tornado had touched down behind the neighbor to the left, snapping trees in half. The tornado then apparently jumped over our house and touched down again behind the neighbor to the right of us, again damaging trees. We give thanks to God for sparing us from the storms.
According to the Diocese of St. Petersburg, this prayer can be traced to St. Anthony of Padua. It is from the Pieta Prayer Book.
